Allergen exposure means contact with something your immune system reacts to: tree, grass or weed pollen, house dust mite, animal dander, or mould spores. Unlike many triggers, exposure often follows a predictable calendar or a predictable place, which makes it one of the clearest patterns to see when you log it on the same timeline as your symptoms.

In allergic disease, the immune system produces IgE antibodies against a harmless protein. When that protein lands on the lining of the nose, eyes, airway or skin, it cross-links IgE on mast cells, which release histamine and other mediators within minutes. That early phase produces sneezing, itch, watery discharge and redness. Four to twelve hours later a late phase brings in eosinophils and other cells, and this is what produces the heavy blocked nose, the night cough and the deep tiredness that people often blame on something else entirely. Each allergen has a signature. There are usually two waves. Sneezing, itch, watery eyes and a runny nose begin within five to thirty minutes of contact.
